Zotero + Dropbox = Gold

So I've tried the Zotero extension for Firefox a while back and it is just about a must have application, especially for us pointy-headed academic types. But the current version suffers the same Achilles heal as local bookmarks: the database of stored information resides on the hard drive of the computer you are currently using.

Zotero is now trying out a version 1.5 preview that will provide "Sync" technology between computers, but with the aid of Dropbox, you can take advantage of distributed storage and get the same functionality as distributed bookmarks within the Google Toolbar.

Simply install Dropbox into your OS and the Zotero extension into your Firefox 2+ browser and then point the Storage Location on the Advanced tab of the Preferences menu option to a folder you create in your local Dropbox directory -- and presto, access to your Zotero database from all of your computers.

I'm currently using it on the multiple computers in my office, laboratories and home across Win2K, WinXP and Ubuntu. Nifty.

I´m already using zotero, this means that I already have files in my zotero folder. If I change the Storage Location, does zotero move my existing files? or it just star a new point (empty folder) from now ?

Beautiful.

I'm pretty sure Zotero will simply use the new location.

If you simply copy your existing Zotero folder into the new Dropbox and fix the location, I think you will be set...

Hi, I am looking to use the same thing, I use both drop box and the syncing version of zotero. I wouldn't be able to write my dissertation without it.
However, the problem I see are 1) the changing of storage location, which has been dealt with here.
2) Working across platforms. Part of the attraction of zotero is that it can be used on linux mac and windows. However, I don't think my Windows zotero will like using the Mac zotero folder, or will it have no problem?

I don't have access to a MAC, but I've been using Dropbox across many Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) installations for over a year now and it has not given any troubles.

I guess you could take a look at the Zotero documentation and see if there is a difference between Mac/PC versions of Zotero.
